What is Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising?

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) is a means of advertising on the Internet where the advertiser does not pay a fee to place an ad on a webpage, but rather pays a certain amount of money each time someone clicks on their ad and is taken to a page on their website. Advertisers bid (much like an auction) on keywords and keyword phrases relevant to their target market on Google for example.

PPC is a great way to drive targeted traffic to your website because you only pay for the actual clicks to your site.  It allows you to get maximum exposure while still allowing you to control the amount you want to spend on your marketing campaign. You can also track the effectiveness of your ad campaign using the search engine analytics.

PPC also allows you to geo-target your clients. You can target your clients locally or intentionally depending on the type of services you offer.

There are many PPC providers, but the major ones are Google Adwords, Yahoo! Search Marketing  and Microsoft Ad Centre. All three work under a bid-based model. Websites that utilise PPC ads will display an advertisement when a keyword query matches an advertiser’s keyword list, or when a content site displays relevant content. Such advertisements are called sponsored links or sponsored ads and appear adjacent to or above organic results on search engine results pages, or anywhere a web developer chooses a content site.
